KWAY Organic Coffee Farmers LTD, Papua New Guinea
KWAY is an organic coffee cooperative made up of 600 members from 14 villages in the region of Goroka in Papua New Guinea. The Goroka region is extremely remote and can only be reached by small aircraft or by a road that is only accessible during very dry periods. The cooperative was founded in 1998 with the intent of improving the infrastructure of the region, providing greater market access to local producers, and protecting the environment by promoting sustainable and organic farming practices.
The Fair Trade price has enabled KWAY Organic Coffee Farmers LTD to establish various social and productive programs
Education. KWAY provides accessible financing for all cooperative members, which leads to improvements to education and healthcare facilities and services. Constructing a new local elementary school is one of many benefits to come.
Productive Investment. Crop diversification projects provide members with technical support and allow them to produce items such as chili and cardamom for the local market, as well as vegetables for home consumption. The cooperative also provides support to those who want learn and engage in animal husbandry.
Credit Program. KWAY offers its members pre-harvest financing, which provides financial stability.
Home Improvements. The co-op built a new water supply system that now serves the entire KWAY community. KWAY sponsors a home improvement program that helps raise members' standard of living.
Womens Programs. The cooperative sponsors women%u2019s education programs that address, among other concerns, reproductive health issues.
